As unfortunate as that may seem, that is why the female trout lay so many eggs... to have some healthy fry survive.
While I was feeding them today, it amazed me how much of their behavior is ingrained in their DNA. Being a fly fisherman, and having observed many trout in the wild, it was amazing to me to see them exhibiting the same behavior as adult trout. Breeching the water jumping for food, ignoring the food if it was to far out of reach, moving toward the food as if to take it only to change their minds for some unknown reason. Not only do they swim toward their food, they are chasing each other around the breeder basket. And if you look very closely, when you feed them, you can see them shift their eyes while they decide to take the food or let it float on by. At only 2cm long, it is truly incredible to see them behave like adults. It's going to be fun to watch them grow.
